‘We’ll Know by Monday’: CNN’s Chris Wallace Says Dems Can’t ‘Force’ Biden Out, Predicts He Will Go Voluntarily

CNN’s Chris Wallace believes President Joe Biden will drop his 2024 reelection bid voluntarily and will do so with no influence from those in his party, who he said are powerless in the decision-making process.

During the network’s pre-coverage of Thursday night’s final Republican National Convention event, Wallace appeared on CNN News Central , to discuss mounting speculation that Biden will suspend his campaign.

CNN anchor Boris Sanchez reminded Wallace of numerous reports that multiple high-profile Democrats have urged Biden to walk away amid concerns he cannot win. Influential Democrats who have reportedly urged Biden privately to hang it up include Chuck Schumer , Hakeem Jeffries , and Nancy Pelosi .

“There are these reports that Nancy Pelosi, that Democratic figures have directly spoken to him about the potential for him getting out of the race,” Sanchez said. “How do you see this playing out?”

Wallace replied that he was surprised Biden was still in the race, citing the president’s poor debate performance three weeks ago against former President Donald Trump in Atlanta.

“If you asked me today, I guess I’d say I think he’ll he’ll still drop out, but in the end, it’s down the one tough 81-year-old guy who’s in Delaware with the closest members of his family and his political family and if he decides he’s not going to drop out, I don’t think the Democratic Party either can or will force him,” Wallace said. He concluded:

If I had to bet your house on it, I’d bet that he’s going to drop out. It’s interesting just taking it kind of after the [Trump shooting] and the early parts of the convention, [talk of Biden stepping aside] seemed to die down. But now as the convention is about to end, we’re getting in a political vacuum again, it feels like it’s building up and it may reach a point of no return. I think we’ll know by Monday at the latest.

Wallace’s comments were delivered hours after the release of a disputed report from Axios that Biden could end his campaign by the end of the weekend.
