I Tried the Viral Lalo High Chair and Not Only Is It Chic, My Baby Loves It, Too

I'm not going to lie, before I gave birth to my son last year, I was deeply convinced I would be an *aesthetic* mom—you know, all minimalist toys, neutral hues and, above all, no bulky plastic high chair . Well, considering my living room looks like a Fisher-Price showroom, that didn't really work out for us. However, we've been using the Lalo The Chair (was $280, now $188) since we've started introducing solids, and it's the cutest little high chair I've ever seen ( finally , a win for home decor ).

I've seen this high chair all over TikTok in many different colors, and am happy to report they all look exactly as pictured on the site. Some of the details I get into below are either loved or not-so-loved by parents. This TikTok creator , for one, illustrates how easy it is to use, and calls out some of its benefits, including the leg feet grips, height-to-table ratio and the foot rest.

Everything I Love About the Lalo High Chair

For starters, the Lalo really is as stylish as a high chair could be, and minimalist enough to keep in your dining room without throwing off your home decor, if this is something you're looking for. It has sleek beechwood legs, while the nontoxic plastic seat, tray, foot rest and grippy leg caps all match in whichever color you pick (I got black). The foot rest is adjustable, too, so when your baby is old enough, you can flip it over to lower its height and add extra room for their legs. The whole shebang may look a little short, but it's actually the height of most tables, so your baby can eat right beside you while you sit.

Since there is a plastic bar around the front that's unattached to the tray, I can slide my son into the chair and clip him in first, so it's easier to get him settled (and keep him secure). I can then snap the tray into place for mealtime. When it's time to clean up, you just push in the sides to slide it off. The plastic portions are super easy to wipe clean, and I usually throw the tray in the sink to wash; it's on the smaller side, so it's not difficult to rinse (or even pop in the dishwasher). Speaking of cleaning, I love that I can pull the seat cushion off by just unsnapping the buttons, then throw it in the wash when it's dirty. While I don't use the seat cushion every meal because my baby is quite messy (and I don't want to wash it on a daily basis), it does make him a little extra snug in there, and less likely to slide down like he does sometimes on just the plastic seat.

It's simple to slip the five-point harness around my baby and clip him in for extra security (though I will admit it is tricky to maneuver through the seat cushion). My baby is pretty squirmy, but he sits comfortably through his meals in here. He loves to hit the tray, too (especially when there's food spilled on it).

And Now, Some Gripes

If you have a child who needs a few toys or silicone suction distractions added to the high chair tray to keep them happy, this one may not be the best option due to the smaller tray. It can easily fit a plate, utensils and the mess that will inevitably come with the meal, but it can maybe only accommodate one suction toy and not much else. On that note, I do wish it were a bit bigger and had a cupholder slot, too. I've also noticed that some suction items don't stick all that well to the tray and become unattached easily, which is a bummer, especially for suction plates and bowls.

Another thing I don't love about this chair is the angle of the legs. They stick out pretty widely from the side, making it more difficult to find room for it in your home, not to mention easier to trip over. I've found the best thing to do is to keep it stored in a corner of my dining room that's out of the way of any foot traffic when it's not in use.

While the chair can be adapted with different bottoms to turn into a booster seat or play chair, it bothers me that those pieces aren't included in the set—you have to buy them separately. You can add them to your purchase, of course, but it will bring your non-sale total to $364 versus $280, which feels too expensive, in my opinion.

Bottom Line

There are great things about the Lalo high chair and then there are some not-so-great things about it. For my lifestyle, and how I use the high chair with my baby, I really like it. There aren't a bunch of features to fuss with, it's easy to adjust the foot rest when he gets taller and it's really cute—even, dare I say, chic?
