PAULLINA, Iowa (KCAU) — Dead fish were seen for several miles after manure was spilled into a creek in O’Brien County, officials said.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is looking into a fish kill that occurred at Mud Creek near Paullina. According to the DNR, its office in Spencer was told of the dead fish Wednesday.

Roorda Dairy, a local dairy farm, had been applying manure to a field when some manure entered a blown out tile and discharged into the creek. The manure has stopped releasing into the creek, but it’s not currently known how much was released in total.

An investigation is ongoing, and officials are on site. In the meantime, the DNR advises downstream water users against using water from the creek.
