Nash County needs Election Day poll workers

NASHVILLE — The Nash County Board of Elections is calling for poll workers to facilitate this year’s general election.

Those interested in working on Nov. 5 must be registered to vote in Nash County and be of good moral character; additional qualifications needed to thrive in what is sure to be a fast-paced environment include solid communication and customer service skills and the ability to lift 25 pounds.

Although not required, computer skills are a plus.

JUDGESHIPS, ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Each of the county’s 24 precincts will be manned with a trio of judges, recommended by both major parties and appointed by the county Board of Elections.

A chief judge will coordinate the setup of each center, bearing responsibility for scheduling, supplies, job assignments and ballot inventory, in addition to problem resolution.

Working in support capacity will be a pair of precinct judges tasked with opening and closing the station, vote-counting and security.

In most cases, the chief will align with the sitting governor’s party, while precinct judges will — in all likelihood — represent each of the nation’s major parties.

Spouses and immediate family members of candidates for nomination or election cannot serve any primary or election in which the candidate participates, with the same provisions applying to poll workers’ spouses and relatives.

Lastly, anyone working on a candidate’s campaign or on behalf of a party is not allowed to serve as a poll worker.

ASSISTANT DUTIES, TRAINING

Those in support roles will be assigned certain tasks on Election Day, but they’re expected to remain flexible should needs of the station change.

Requirements for assistants include being able to work 13-14 hours or a willingness to share a shift with a co-worker.

Assistants who leave the polling site before it closes will not be allowed re-entry.

Training for workers will be staged one month ahead of the election and will focus on tasks needed to carry out a successful day.

Chief judges are required to attend individualized training sessions that run three to five hours, with all trainees receiving pay commensurate with their responsibilities.

2024 PAY SCALE

A chief judge will be paid $35 through training and $225 on Election Day — in addition to $50 plus mileage for supply runs — while a help desk worker will earn $25, $15 to assist a setup meeting and $190 on Election Day.

Precinct judges also earn an extra $20 for their responsibilities.

Check-in workers will earn $20 for training, $15 to assist a setup meeting and $175 on Election Day; ballot table workers will earn $15 for training, $15 to assist a setup meeting and $160 on Election Day; curbside workers will earn $15 for training, $15 to assist a setup meeting and $145 on Election Day; machine monitors will earn $15 for training, $15 to assist a setup meeting and $145 on Election Day.
