Bob Newhart, the star of movies like Catch-22 and his own hit TV shows, has died at the age of 94. His death was confirmed by a longtime rep, according to Rolling Stone . He dealt with "a series of short illnesses " before his passing.

Newhart made audiences laugh from the second he hit the mainstream at the turn of the 1960s. He won the Grammy Awards for Best New Artist, Album of the Year, and Best Comedy Album in 1961 for his debut comedy albums The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart and The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back! . That same year, he launched his own variety show, The Bob Newhart Show , which ran until 1962 and earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Male TV Star.

In the 1970s, Newhart created his own sitcom series also titled The Bob Newhart Show . He played psychologist Dr. Robert Hartley for a total of 142 episodes. His run of success continued in the '80s with another sitcom, Newhart , which ran for 184 episodes and ended in 1990.

Newhart became a revered figure in entertainment after several decades in the spotlight, and he never stopped doing what he loved. In 2013, more than five decades after his first Primetime Emmy Award nomination , he took home the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his appearance on The Big Bang Theory . His most recent TV role was on Young Sheldon in the late 2010s.

Newhart is survived by his four children and ten grandchildren. His wife of 60 years, Virginia Quinn, died last year at age 82.
