Vanessa starts her tutorial with a fascinating fact—once your sweet potatoes are growing enough to send off vines, you’re pretty much set! All you need to do is chop off some of those vines and put them in a bit of water or really moist soil until they start rooting. Easy peasy, right?

She shares that in Texas, where she lives, it's tough to keep the soil moist enough to promote root growth this time of year. That’s why she prefers the water method when it comes to propagation . Genius! Now, you just need a glass of water; no fancy garden tools required.

Once you’ve got your sweet potato slips (that's just a fancy term for live cuttings), it's time to place them in your planter. Vanessa suggests using a vertical planter, which is both space-saving and easy to maintain. Picture this—a tri-planter that looks like three planters in the shape of a triangle, stacked on top of each other. Offsetting them as you stack allows each planter to be at an angle from one another, making it super easy to reach every planter. Plus, there’s a watering dish separating each layer, making watering a breeze!

After your slips are planted, just be sure to check back frequently to ensure everything is growing nice and healthy. According to Vanessa, you should have sweet potatoes ready to harvest in a fairly short time. Keep this process going throughout the growing season, and you’ll have an almost endless supply of sweet potatoes. The only thing that might slow you down is cold weather.

    Why Propagate Sweet Potatoes?

    • Cost-Effective : Save money by growing your own instead of constantly buying.
    • Sustainable : Less trips to the store means less carbon footprint.
    • Control : You know exactly what’s going into your soil and water, ensuring healthier produce.
    • Fun : It’s a rewarding hobby that’s as close to foolproof as anything in your garden gets.

Have fun, and happy planting, folks!
