ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior High School boys’ and girls’ basketball programs concluded their three-day summer development camp Thursday.

Split into two sessions, over 30 elementary-aged campers worked out in the morning. In the afternoon session for middle schoolers, more than 40 players attended.

Leading instruction was Lady Raider head coach Teddy Moseley, who was helped by Frank Harrington and Whitney Smith.

Donald Pettigrew, the Raiders’ head coach, ran “more of the behind the scenes” of the camp, but he joined in the fun during the final hour of camp.

Several current players helped serve as instructors — rising junior J’Nasia Neal and rising sophomores Josiah Brewington, BJ Hinson, Madisen Jackson and Kaniah Little.

Javian Drake — a two-time All-Sandhills Athletic Conference selection and recent graduate — officiated scrimmages during the afternoon session.

“These kids come out and support the Richmond basketball teams and this is our chance to give back to them,” Pettigrew said. “Watching this younger group is so exciting. They have no care in the world and they’re here to have fun.

“We had a heck of a turnout again this year and I appreciate the parents for letting that happen,” he continued. “The goal is to help each kid get better and get all of them more interested in the sport. Learning the game the right way at this age is really important.”

Thursday’s final day of camp culminated in a series of small-sided games and scrimmages, allowing campers to put their new skills to the test.

The Richmond Observer will publish a separate article and photo gallery of the middle school camp later today.
