MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — The Madison County Commission has received a $400,000 grant to construct a multi-use trail.

The commission was one of six to receive a grant to help their communities improve outdoor recreational opportunities.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) administered the grants, which were made possible thanks to funds from the Federal Highway Administration’s Recreational Trials Program.

According to ADECA, the grant will allow the commission to construct a 10-foot wide, 4,750-foot long multi-use asphalt trail along an abandoned railroad bed between Smokey Hill Court and County Lake Road in Madison County.

“These projects will benefit people of all ages and provide them with even more reasons to enjoy Alabama’s outdoors,” Gov. Ivey said. “I am pleased to award these grants that will increase recreation opportunities for many residents while making these communities better places to live.”

The six grants total $1.4 million in funds to help the local projects.

Madison County is the only county government to receive a grant. The other five recipients include projects in Abbeville, Hueytown, Hurtsboro, Lowndesboro and New Site.
