Clayton deputy hit while investigating crash that injured 2 deputies, detainee

A deputy was struck by a car Thursday evening while at the scene of a three-vehicle crash in Clayton County that injured two other deputies and a detainee they were transporting, authorities said.

The earlier wreck happened on Forest Parkway at Southridge Parkway, where a driver suspected of being under the influence is accused of rear ending a 2021 Dodge Charger occupied by the two deputies and the detainee, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The suspected impaired driver had been traveling east on Forest Parkway in a 2014 Lincoln MKZ around 5:15 p.m. when they failed to stop in time and struck the Charger, which then hit a 2020 Chevrolet Trax stopped at a red light, troopers said.

Both deputies, the detainee, and the driver of the Lincoln were all taken to the hospital after the crash, which left the rear end of the patrol vehicle severely damaged, the GSP said.

No other details were provided by the GSP about the suspected impaired driver, including their identity or the charges they are facing. The injured are all said to be stable, officials said.

About two hours later, another deputy was standing in the intersection at the crash site when they were struck by the driver of a 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander, which drove past a tow truck and emergency lights warning travelers about the previous wreck, troopers said.

The deputy fell to the ground and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. They are expected to be OK, according to the GSP.

Both incidents on Thursday remain under investigation.
