Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark is amid a historic rookie campaign. Entering the All-Star break averaging 17.1 points per game, 8.2 assists per game, and 5.8 rebounds per game, Clark would be the first player in WNBA history to average these stats for an entire season.
Named to the WNBA All-Star team, Clark received well-deserved recognition for the season she is having. That said, a recent statistic shows the WNBA may still be undervaluing Clark, as she was not named Eastern Conference Player of the Week despite historic numbers.
According to StatMamba on X, Clark is the only player in WNBA history to not win Player of the Week with averages of at least 20 points per game and 10 assists per game:
As this stat shows, even when Clark is not winning awards she is still making WNBA history. The Eastern Conference Player of the Week honor went to New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu, who averaged 25.0 points per game, 5.0 assists per game, and 5.0 rebounds per game.
Ionescu was joined by Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson for this week's honors:
There is no official criteria for this award, but it is possible the WNBA factored in team success. While Ionescu has a much better supporting cast than Clark, her Liberty went a perfect 4-0 this week, while the Fever finished just 2-2. That said, this announcement from the league has been very controversial, and created another historic moment for Clark.
The WNBA schedule will now take a extended break for the Paris Olympics before resuming play on August 15th.
