MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — The heat and humidity is having an impact on cycling groups in Montgomery County.

The chair of the Rockville Bicycle Committee, Jake Jakubek, said their weekly group rides have been canceled for the past few weeks because of the high temperatures.

Jakubek said when he does go for a ride, he takes rehydration supplements and drinks more water than usual since the humidity causes him to constantly sweat and has a new riding schedule to avoid the heat.

“Once the heat kicked in,” Jakubek said. “I just started riding an hour or two maximum. I started riding at 7, 7:30 in the morning and try to get in by 9, 10 a.m. at the latest before the heat really drills up because it’s too much, and it’s dangerous.”

He said it’s important for people who do ride in the heat to properly hydrate before and during their ride, and to make sure not to push themselves past their limits.
