‘Shorten the Damn Rallies!’ Ex-Trump Adviser Incredulous at 92-Minute RNC Acceptance Speech

Former President Donald Trump’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention clocked in at one hour and 32 minutes on Thursday night. CNN reported that it was the longest major party presidential nomination acceptance speech in modern history.

Trump repeatedly went off-script in an address that felt more like a rally speech, though he seemed somewhat subdued, even as he railed against longtime nemeses such as “crazy Nancy Pelosi.”

Afterward, David Urban, who worked on Trump’s 2020 campaign, offered unsolicited advice to his old boss after the speech finally concluded.

“What the president– former president needs to do, shorten the damn rallies!” Urban said. “You go to a rally, they’re too long. The people at the end of the rally, they’re leaving for the exits because it’s like a football game with the score’s run up. They wanna get back to their car before the crowd leaves. Donald Trump needs to cut down about 30, 40 minutes. Go back to the old days. That’s the big critique of this speech. Too long.”

Republican strategist Scott Jennings noted that Trump dedicated a portion of his speech to the assassination attempt on Saturday in which the former president was shot in the ear.

“But a big chunk of it was the shooting!” Jennings said.

“The shooting [story] was great,” Urban shot back. “You could condense the other stuff. If he could’ve condensed, it would’ve been a home run.”
