‘He Was on Stage with a Bag of Cocaine Taped to His Face!’ Roy Wood Jr. Cracks Up CNN Panel with Review of Trump’s RNC Acceptance Speech

Comedian Roy Wood Jr. joined CNN’s after-hours coverage of Donald Trump’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention and put his co-panelists in stitches.

Trump gave what CNN said was the longest acceptance speech for a major party candidate in the modern era, clocking in at one hour and 32 minutes. In his address, Trump recalled the assassination attempt on his life in which a gunman shot him in the ear. The former president also slammed President Joe Biden, “crazy Nancy Pelosi,” and “witch hunts,” while repeatedly going off script in a meandering slog of a speech.

For the fourth night in a row at the convention, Trump wore a large white bandage over his wounded right year.

“I gotta start with you here, Roy,” Laura Coates said while covering the speech in Milwaukee. “You were chuckling.”

    Wood responded:

He was on stage with a bag of cocaine taped to his face! That wasn’t a band-aid. That looked like the band-aid you get while you waitin’ on the band-aid you supposed to get.

And I think that what Trump did to open up that speech was play on the sympathy of that. Now, yes, there was an attempt on his life. And you should speak to that. You should talk about that. You should talk about how fortunate you are. But that dovetails perfectly into his message of healing and forgiveness and togetherness. And he’s able to play that violin like a damn pro to his base. And that’s what he did tonight.

Coates and Democratic strategist Karen Finney cracked up at Wood’s “cocaine” remark, but Finney pushed back on the latter part of his assessment.

“But then the love and the hope just went like, right out the door,” she said. “You could tell when he was reading “love” and “unity” and then he just went off. And it was the same, familiar tropes.”
