Los Angeles Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney highlighted the four key reasons why the MLS giants are looking to close out a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund legend Marco Reus on a free transfer.

The German forward's storied 12-year spell at BVB came to a close at the end of the most recent European season as he departed the club following the Champions League final. A fairytale end to Reus' stay at Signal Iduna Park was not meant to be as Real Madrid prevailed to become continental champions - with his next chapter set to come in the United States.

Following 429 appearances and 170 goals for the side he supported as a boy, the 35-year-old is attracting heavy interest from the LA Galaxy after the expiration of his contract in Dortmund. With the MLS Secondary Transfer Window having now opened, team head coach Vanney has made no secret of his desire to make the striker part of his squad.

Speaking following a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rapids this week, the LA boss confirmed that club chiefs are looking to strengthen if the opportunity arises in the coming weeks. Outlining the Californian outfit's strategy, he asserted: "Anyone that we hopefully add in the summer window is somebody who can continue to make the team better."

Addressing the speculation over a swoop for Bundesliga legend Reus, he then waxed lyrical about the attacker's attributes as he admitted to interest in the player. He continued: "A player of his profile gives you experience, it gives you quality, it gives you versatility, also – a winning mentality, a championship mentality. Those types of things are always good for teams."

"We're trying to continue to, with anything that we do, to make the team better, to raise the level, to get deeper, to get all those things that you need as you go down the tail end and you try to make a run at an MLS Cup. You try to use the summer window the best way possible to keep improving the team."

Ultimately, Vanney remained focused on the job at hand of coaching his team as he left the business of transfer dealings to his superiors at the Galaxy, adding: "We'll see what gets done. But I know the goal with the guys upstairs is to try to get more assets to help this team continue to improve and make a push."

As for Reus , he signed off from Dortmund duties for a final time after a glittering run with the club, which saw him win the Bundesliga Player of the Season prize on three occassions, alongside two DFB-Pokal trophies. In an emotional statement confirming his departure, he said: "I am incredibly grateful and proud of my time at Borussia Dortmund.

"I've spent more than half of my life at this club and enjoyed every day, although there have of course also been difficult moments. I already know that it will be difficult for me to say goodbye at the end of the season."

Reus added: "Nevertheless, I am glad that there is now clarity and that we can concentrate fully on the last few important games. We have a big goal in sight. To do this, we will need the support of our amazing fans, to whom I would like to express my sincere thanks for their incredible support over the years."
