Can sales tax be waived when gifted a vehicle registered under an LLC? | Ask the RI DMV

    By Chuck Hollis,

Q: My son is sole proprietor of a limited liability company in which he has a vehicle registered. He would like to officially gift the vehicle to me. Is this possible? Will the sales tax be waived?

    — Ron F.

A: It would be best if you – or your son – contact the Division of Taxation, due to the many unknown elements of your question. The RI DMV takes direction from them on how to handle this type of transaction, as each occurrence can be different.

The Division of Taxation does not take walk-ins. Here is an email address you can use: tax.excise@tax.ri.gov and a telephone number to call: (401) 574-8955.
