Johan Bakayoko speaks out on future as Liverpool sent promising $54m transfer message

PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko has admitted he would be open to joining "a top club" this summer .

The Belgian international enjoyed a stellar season last term, helping the Dutch side to their first league title since 2017. Bakayoko was in inspired form too, scoring 12 goals and registering nine assists in the Eredivisie.

His strong showings for the Dutch champions last season has seen the 21-year-old be linked with a host of clubs this summer, including Liverpool who has yet to make a foray into the transfer market.

Arsenal has also been linked with the Belgian star, who likes to cut in off the right-wing and onto his left foot. And now with the transfer window about to take off with players returning to their clubs from international action, Bakayoko has claimed he is "ready for the top" whilst also adding "PSV is also a top club".

"If I were to leave Eindhoven, it would only be to a club that plays for the prizes just like PSV," Bakayoko told Eindhovens Dagblad .

"Becoming a champion is what I want. And win the Champions League . I have the qualities for that. I'm ready for the top. But PSV is also a top club, especially if many players from last season stay. And it's nice here.

"Yes, really. Nice. I think I've never radiated a moment that I play here reluctantly. The holiday was shortly after the European Championships, but it's great to get back to PSV. Last season's vibe is still there."

There's no doubt Bakayoko would likely prove to be an expensive signing this summer for the Reds, with a fee of around $54million (£43m/€50m) mooted for the winger. Additionally, it would also be a big outlay of transfer funds to spend on a winger who would not start over Mohamed Salah , who unless sold, will be starting on the right-wing for Liverpool in their Premier League opener against Ipswich Town on August 17.

Salah was targeted late last summer by Saudi Pro League Al-Ittihad, who offered a monstrous $269m (£215m/€253m) for the Egyptian’s services. And while the Reds turned down Al-Ittihad, in part because they had no way of replacing Salah that late in the transfer window, they may consider selling up this summer, with Salah having just recently turned 32.
