Houseplant of the week: Madagascar palm

Why will I love it?
The Madagascar palm ( Pachypodium lamerei ) is an extraordinary succulent. It’s not a true palm but features a thick, spiny trunk topped with a cluster of glossy green leaves, giving it a distinctive and dramatic appearance. When mature, it may even surprise you with small, fragrant white flowers.

Light or shade?
It thrives in bright light and can tolerate direct sunlight. Position it near a south- or west-facing window where it can bask in full sun.

Where should I put it?
On sunny windowsill and in a heavy pot to prevent toppling as it can become quite top-heavy with growth.

How do I keep it alive?
Water thoroughly in spring and summer, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, water just enough to keep the soil from completely drying out. Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix to prevent root rot. Keep in warm conditions – between 18C and 24C.

Did you know ?
Native to Madagascar, it has evolved to survive in harsh, arid environments. Its trunk stores water, allowing it to withstand drought. It also has a toxic latex sap, so keep out of reach of pets and children. In its natural habitat, it can grow up to six metres tall.
