RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Many agencies and some hospitals in Virginia are experiencing the effects of the global IT outage that began Friday morning.

According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles , its customer service centers were closed until noon Friday, July 19 and its website was unable to carry out online transactions due to the outage.

At 3:20 p.m., the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles reported that all of its customer service centers, including its West Henrico, Charlottesville and Chesterfield offices, are open for service.

A spokesperson for the Chesterfield County Police Department said it is unable to receive information regarding vehicles from the Department of Motor Vehicles due to the outage, though it’s experiencing no other issues.

In addition, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) sent a message to the university community saying that the outage is impacting computers at VCU and VCU Health, citing an issue that came from a software update from cybersecurity company CrowdStrike.

The university said a solution has been developed for overcoming the issue, but each individual computer must be updated by IT personnel.

A spokesperson for Dominion Energy told 8News that its customer service call centers was also impacted by the CrowdStrike outage, as its call center was temporarily unable to receive any customer calls.

Call centers were later said to be back up and running, according to the energy provider.

Governor Glenn Youngkin released the following statement regarding the outages:

Amidst the global tech outages, overnight we have conducted an initial assessment to determine impacts across government agencies and departments for functionality. Critical health and safety systems, including 911 call systems and transportation infrastructure, are operational. However, airlines continue to experience significant disruptions. The assessment determined that government administrative functions are experiencing disruptions, and we are coordinating with local, regional and federal authorities and private sector critical infrastructure partners in order to reestablish normal operations. As a result of the administrative disturbances, Virginians may experience delays and we ask everyone to remain patient as we work to remedy and reestablish the high standards that Virginians deserve.

    Gov. Youngkin

8News continues to look into other local agencies, businesses and services affected by the outage.
