Twitter/X owner Elon Musk continued his campaign against “woke” on Thursday by posting a meme that showed a number of fictional characters that have been race-swapped in other adaptations.

The petty complaint that white characters — which were created primarily when white men were almost exclusively in charge of creating things — were being portrayed by non-white actors is not a new one . It was done to be more inclusive and represent more of the world outside our window, which is something Marvel’s very own Stan Lee said often , especially when it came to diversity.

So when internet nerds bemoan new versions of old characters because now they’re not white , that, as Twitter/X user evan loves worf puts it, has the appearance of “Nazi shit.”

Here’s an example of why, especially in the case of characters who aren’t even humans, this is a dumb argument:

Among the other characters in this graphic are Ariel the Little Mermaid, Heimdall from the Thor comics, Little Orphan Annie, and Lego Batgirl. Now, if I’m not mistaken, the original Batgirl was also not made of Legos, so where is the outrage? Where is the outrage?

None of these characters are real. Not one of them. They never had races or genders. And there are way more effective ways to tell people you’re racist than by whining about imaginary creatures.
