Serena Williams , born on September 26, 1981, in Saginaw, Michigan, is a renowned American tennis player who has revolutionized women's tennis with her powerful style of play. With 23 Grand Slam singles titles and four Olympic gold medals, she is considered one of the greatest tennis players in history.

Serena and her elder sister Venus were introduced to tennis at a young age by their father, Richard Williams . The family moved to Compton, California, where the sisters trained on municipal courts. Serena turned professional in 1995, and by 1999, she had won her first major championship at the US Open.

Serena's career took off in 2002 when she won four consecutive Grand Slam singles tournaments, known as the "Serena Slam," from the 2002 French Open to the 2003 Australian Open. She went on to win 23 Slam singles events, including seven Australian Opens, seven Wimbledon, six US Opens, and three French Opens. This achievement surpassed fellow 'GOAT' candidate Steffi Graf and marked the most of any woman in the Open era.

In addition to her singles success, Serena and Venus were formidable in doubles, winning three Olympic golds together and 14 Slam titles as a pairing. Serena also won her sole Olympic singles title at London 2012.

Serena's last Slam singles success was at the 2017 Australian Open, which she won while pregnant with her first child. After giving birth to her daughter Olympia, she returned to tennis and made four Slam finals but lost all four. In January 2020, Serena claimed her last title as a mother at the Auckland Open.

Serena has not officially announced her retirement from tennis, but in a Vogue interview ahead of the 2022 US Open, she stated that she was "evolving away from tennis toward other things that are important to me." Now a mother of two, Serena is involved in philanthropy and invests in female and BIPOC-owned business ventures.
