BRYAN COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) – As our local teachers gear up for another school year in a few weeks, we can’t forget about them during the summer months.

In this edition of “A Banana for the Teacher” we’re going to Bryan County to meet a teacher more than deserving of the recognition.

“I had no clue that this was happening,” said McAllister Elementary kindergarten teacher Jane Shuhart. “I didn’t even know it was a thing until you walked through and I read the sign and was like, ‘Wait a minute. What?'”

We surprised Ms. Shuhart on one of the last days of class at McAllister Elementary.

“When I see their little smiling faces I have a better day, I really do. I hope I do the same for them,” Shuhart told WSAV.

The day was full of those smiling faces as we surprised Ms. Shuhart with the help of a partnership with the Savannah Bananas and Farah & Farah.

“These kids are incredible. We have gotten so much joy out of surprising them and seeing how excited the teachers are. So, we are very, very happy to partner with you guys and work on this project,” said Glory Paul with Farah & Farah.

Ms. Shuhart takes home $500 for the work she does in the classroom every day.

“I can get a lot of things. Toys, puzzles, a lot of learning games for them, a lot of reading materials,” Shuhart said.

It’s a small show of appreciation for our educators who give so much to our communities from both their hearts and their pockets.

“A lot comes out of my pocket. This will mean a lot more for the students. I can get what I put out of pocket and then some. A lot more,” Shuhart told WSAV.

As we get closer to the start of the 2024-2025 school year, we need your help finding more deserving educators to honor.
