Letter: Expanding voucher program will hurt rural counties most

I am writing on behalf of The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan group.

In our state, 78 percent of students are educated in public schools. North Carolina taxpayers' money is spread out over the state for school funding according to population.

Now, 800 million dollars of taxpayer money has been allocated for vouchers. Some vouchers would go to the wealthiest students. This takes funding away from counties that have few or no private schools.

Schools in rural areas would receive less money. Money instead would flow to larger areas such as the school systems in Mecklenburg, Wake or Guilford counties.

Please contact your legislators and ask them to say "no" to the voucher program expansion.
