CENTRAL NEW YORK (WSYR-TV) — Homeowners and businesses continue to clean up after severe storms swept through parts of the central New York region. For those left with extensive damage, the Better Business Bureau is warning you to not fall victim to scammers.

Many Central New Yorkers are still picking up the pieces after severe storms swept through parts of the region, leaving devastation in their wake.

The BBB is warning that a simple knock at the door could lead to an even bigger issue.

“There are some that unfortunately try to rip people off after a tragedy or a disaster,” said Katarina Schmieder, communications director at Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York.

They are known as “Fly-By-Night” contractors or sometimes storm-chasers. They go door-to-door, trying to get business from victims of natural disasters. Typically taking your money and vanishing, without doing a thing.

“A lot of these scam artists will show up and say that you need to pay them right now. If someone is demanding like that, that’s usually a red flag and you should never pay in full upfront. Always see if you can split payments,” said Schmieder.

BBB recommends asking for their ID and checking to see if their car has a business name, phone number and in-state license plate.

“They should be able to provide you with the proper documentation and licensing. If you’re unsure, you can always ask for a couple of references,” said Schmieder. “Give them a call, see what they’ve experienced with a company.”

Even if they look and seem legit, Schmieder says it’s always do your homework.

“Try to get multiple quotes. Reach out to a few different companies. The lowest offer isn’t always the best deal. So that’s something to keep in mind,” said Schmieder.

Always make sure you get a contract and look it over, before signing.

BBB also warns residents to be aware of charity scams.
