Good morning everyone. We wake up this morning to a familiar sight - last night's leftover thunderstorm action bringing heavy rain and thunder across parts of the Upper Midwest and along the Gulf Coast.

Two mechanisms are to blame for each area, and we'll start off with the Gulf Coast. Our shower and thunderstorm action is the result of a stalled out front that failed to clear the coast. This is the same front that brought severe weather to Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia yesterday evening.

It is a common occurance this time of year that these fronts don't make it all the way through, and usually snap back as a warm front, or meander as a stationary front until finally fizzling out. What this means is we should expect scattered heavy showers and embedded thunderstorms in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Panhandle of Florida over the next few days.

Some of that activity could contain isolated severe weather. While we don't have any severe thunderstorm watches or warnings at this time, we could see some scattered small areas where damaging winds and large hail meet severe weather criteria.

The second area of concern in the Upper Midwest, is caused by energy riding the back side of our ridge responsible for our heatwave. While we don't see any severe weather at the moment, sunshine and afternoon heating will cause enough instability in order for severe thunderstorms to develop. Look for this morning's action to weaken, then regenerate into much stronger storms as they sink south.

Areas such as South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and possibly into Oklahoma & northern Texas, could experience scattered severe weather. Storms will be capable of damaging winds in excess of 60mph, very large hail, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and isolated tornadoes.

Stay tuned to your local agencies for the lastest watches and warning.
