Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike says Friday's outage happened when it deployed a faulty update to computers running Microsoft Windows. The company said that a fix was on the way.

As of 9 a.m., there were major disruptions at Newark Liberty International Airport.

On X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, the airport's handle posted "The PANYNJ is not affected by the ongoing global outage, but airlines are experiencing delays/cancellations. DO NOT head to EWR unless your flight is confirmed."

Murphy said the state's Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) was activated as of 3 a.m.

"(The SEOC has) provided guidance to relevant executive branch agencies on how to address the situation. We are also engaging county and local governments, 911 call centers, and utilities to assess the impact and offer our assistance," Murphy said in a statement.
