CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WOWK) — Del. Kayla Young (D-Kanawha) posted to X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday that President Joe Biden should withdraw from the presidential race to “allow new, energetic leadership to take the reins.”

Calls for President Biden to drop out of the race have been plentiful ever since his debate performance in June. Biden has said he is “one thousand percent” staying in the race, according to reporting by the Associated Press .

Del. Young called President Biden “a true public servant” and went on to say, “It is time for change. Our nation and our democracy require it.”

“West Virginians and Americans are not satisfied with the status quo- nor should they be,” Del. Young said in a statement. “Our generation and beyond deserve a country that works for us and listens to our voice and isn’t politically motivated, but motivated to put our country and communities first.”

According to an Emerson College poll , sponsored by Democrats for the Next Generation and published Thursday, former President Donald Trump is leading President Biden nationally and in seven battleground states.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
