With Willie Nelson a pillar in country music, it seemed only fitting that his children would follow in their father’s footsteps. Throughout the decades, Willie has become part of the genre, helping shape its sound over the years. And with the country icon having an understanding of the power behind the lyrics, his son, Lukas Nelson, continues to prove his own talents and how his voice can fit any genre. Before having to take over for his father while he recovered, Lukas decided to take a trip back to the 1960s to cover Paul Simon’s “The Sound of Silence.”

Having been performed by several bands over the years, Simon & Garfunkel introduced the song on their album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. When released, the album garnered mixed reviews from fans, but over the years – “The Sound of Silence” took on a life of its own. And for Lukas, it seemed like the perfect song to cover.

Dedicating the cover to New York, Nelson flaunted his memorable—and familiar—vocals. As one fan put it, “We’ll never lose Willie’s voice… this young man sounds just like his daddy! Get ’em Lukas! We’re listening!”

Lukas Nelson Recalls Best Advice Given To Him By His Father

While released over four years ago, Lukas covering the song received over one million views. With fans filling the comment section, they wrote, “At my age, 72, I told my children I didn’t want to live in a world without Willie. Man Lukas you are an amazing musician, I think I might stick around another 70 just to hear your music. “ Another fan added, “I’ve been listening to you for a while now. Everyone says you sound like your dad. Your dad is one of the greats of all time. But you have your own voice and your own message that is great and getting better. Don’t stop you’ve only begun to explore your capabilities. Thank you for respecting music and taking it to the next level.”

Besides covering iconic songs and taking over for his father, Lukas recalled some of the best advice given to him by Willie. Speaking on Biscuits & Jam, the singer explained how many artists can get lost creatively. “There’s so many directions you can go and it can be so overwhelming. And so I think what I learned from him at an early age was just to recognize if you have something and follow it.”
