The Heart of Florida’s Culinary Scene

The Cuban Sandwich is more than just a meal; it's a symbol of Florida's vibrant cultural tapestry. Imagine biting into a warm, toasted sandwich, the crust crackling beneath your teeth to reveal layers of savory roasted pork, sweet ham, tangy pickles, and gooey Swiss cheese, all brought together by a hint of mustard. Each bite offers a perfect balance of flavors and textures, a testament to the culinary heritage of Florida's Cuban community.

    Recipe: Classic Cuban Sandwich

    Ingredients:

    • 1 loaf Cuban bread (or French baguette)
    • 4 oz roasted pork, thinly sliced
    • 4 oz ham, thinly sliced
    • 4 slices Swiss cheese
    • 2 dill pickles, thinly sliced lengthwise
    • Yellow mustard
    • Butter (for grilling)

    Instructions:

    1. Prep the Bread: Slice the Cuban bread in half lengthwise. Spread a thin layer of mustard on the inside of both halves.
    2. Layer the Ingredients: On the bottom half of the bread, layer the roasted pork, followed by the ham, Swiss cheese, and pickles. Place the top half of the bread on top.
    3. Grill the Sandwich: Preheat a panini press or a large skillet over medium heat. Butter the outside of the sandwich and place it in the press or skillet.
    4. Press and Cook: If using a skillet, press down with another heavy pan or a brick wrapped in foil. Cook until the bread is crispy and the cheese is melted, about 3-5 minutes per side.
    5. Serve and Enjoy: Slice the sandwich into manageable pieces and serve hot.

I believe that in Tampa, they put salami in it. There's a controversy regarding whether the "original " sandwich had salami or not.
