Bruce Springsteen has never been shy about expressing his love for Bob Dylan. Like many musicians, Springsteen recognizes just how powerful Dylan is as a songwriter. Many even accused him of borrowing from The Bard early on in his career. Though Springsteen certainly moved away from his early folk sensibilities, his appreciation of Dylan never faltered. See what Dylan songs Springsteen cites as his favorites, below.

Bruce Springsteen’s Favorite Bob Dylan Songs

    1. “Like a Rolling Stone”

“Like a Rolling Stone” is one of Dylan’s name-making offerings. As such, it stands to reason Springsteen would add this song to his list. In an interview with Stephen Colbert, Springsteen called it a “History and culture changing piece of music.” We have to agree with The Boss on that front.

How does it feel, how does it feel?

    To be without a home

Like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone

    2. “Visions of Johanna”

Next up we have what Springsteen called “A big song for me“: “Visions of Johanna.” The sprawling ode to some mysterious force is, at times, hard to grasp. Dylan seemingly rambles on in a stream of consciousness, making it hard for the listener to latch onto any finite details. Nevertheless, the infectious musicality of this song makes it a must listen. Springsteen certainly thinks this Dylan song is top tier.

We can hear the night watchman click his flashlight

Ask himself if it’s him or them that’s insane

Louise, she’s all right, she’s just near

She’s delicate and seems like the mirror

    3. “Ring Them Bells”

Springsteen wrapped up his thoughts on “The Best of Dylan” by calling “Ring Them Bells” one of his favorite songs. This track is packed to the brim with religious vernacular. Though that era of Dylan’s career isn’t always well received, “Ring Them Bells” is a shining example of its merits.

    Ring them bells St. Peter

    Where the four winds blow

Ring them bells with an iron hand

    So the people will know

    Oh, it’s rush hour now
