FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WBOY) — FirstEnergy announced Friday that several scam attempts have been reported in its Mon Power service area, which covers all of north central West Virginia.

Several recent scam calls have been made to customers claiming that the customer’s power will be shut off unless they call a provided phone number and make an immediate payment. According to a FirstEnergy spokesperson, Mon Power customers will never be contacted by phone or email by a representative demanding payment to avoid a same-day shutoff.

Even if the number looks like a Mon Power number or the caller ID says Mon Power or FirstEnergy, it could be spoofed, so the best thing to do is to hang up and call the Mon Power customer service number listed on Mon Power’s website, which is 1-800-736-3407.

Widespread disruptions were not the result of security incident or cyberattack: CrowdStrike

FirstEnergy employees will never contact customers to request sensitive information or ask for payment using pre-paid money cards, the release said. The spokesperson also said that if a person claiming to be a Mon Power employee comes to your home, especially if you don’t have an appointment, always ask for proper identification, which employees should have on them at all times.
