Giovanni Mazza Opens Up About His Disastrous GH Audition!

Although he’s been playing violin professionally for more than a decade and has made numerous television appearances as a musician, auditioning for General Hospital was the first in-person acting role that Giovanni Mazza ever auditioned for. And as the daytime newcomer shared with co-stars Steve Burton (Jason) and Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) on their Daily Drama podcast, his meeting with executive producer Frank Valentini and the show’s other producers was a bit of a disaster!
The Illinois native had just moved to Los Angeles, he revealed, when he got called in to GH during his first week in California. “I was supposed to be here for two months, take a few classes, go back home to Chicago, and see where life takes me after that.”
Mazza’s original audition with GH casting director Mark Teschner was for a day player role. “What ended up happening was, Mark brought me in for a producers’ session,” he explained. “I’d just moved to LA. This was my first audition.”
Excited about the prospect, Mazza did his due diligence in preparing for the audition. But when he walked out to his car that day, he found quite a literal mess. “There was about a half a dozen eggs all over my car,” he lamented. “I didn’t have any time to clean it off.”

Despite the literal mess covering his car, Mazza drove to the soap’s studio — and got himself into a figurative mess. “I do it, and I forget my lines,” he confessed. “It was like two pages, and in the middle of the scene, I totally lost track of everything. Thank God Frank was in the room. He said, ‘Gio, just go from the top.’ I did it, but I walked out, and I was pissed. I didn’t represent what I prepared.”
On top of that, he still had to deal with his car! “Also, I had the egg to clean up. I cleaned it up for three hours.”
Needless to say, Mazzo was sure that he would never hear from the soap. But then, “the next day, they called and told me that they wanted to give me a contract role, and they were writing this role for me,” he said. “It blew my mind. Not what I expected at all!”
We have loved seeing Gio around Port Charles, and are glad that the soap saw something more in the young star than what he showed in his botched audition!
