Four More House Dems Release Joint Statement Calling On Biden to Drop Out: ‘We Must Defeat Donald Trump’

Four more House Democratic lawmakers released a joint statement on Friday demanding President Joe Biden bow out of the 2024 race against former President Donald Trump .

Democratic Reps. Jared Huffman (D-CA), Marc Veasey (D-TX), Chuy Garcia (D-IL), and Mark Pocan (D-WI) highlighted their “great admiration” for the president but asked for him to “pass the torch to a new generation of Democratic leaders.”

The group of lawmakers calling on Biden to leave includes a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, Veasey, and a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Garcia. Meanwhile, Huffman and Pocan are members of the progressive caucus.

“We must defeat Donald Trump to save our democracy, protect our alliances and the rules-based international order, and continue building on the strong foundation you have established over the past four years,” the statement reads.

Following Biden’s poor performance at the CNN debate against the former president last month, a growing list of Democratic lawmakers and pundits have suggested he bow out of election due to his age.

“At this point, however, we must face the reality that widespread public concerns about your age and fitness are jeopardizing what should be a winning campaign. These perceptions may not be fair, but they have hardened in the aftermath of last month’s debate and are now unlikely to change. We believe the most responsible and patriotic thing you can do in this moment is to step aside as our nominee while continuing to lead our party from the White House,” the lawmakers added.

Lawmakers cited Vice President Kamala Harris as an example of a potential successor who they said leads a “deep and talented bench of younger leaders.”

“Passing the torch would fundamentally change the trajectory of the campaign. It would reinvigorate the race and infuse Democrats with enthusiasm and momentum heading into our convention next month,” the statement concludes.

Officially, 27 Democratic lawmakers have publicly asked Biden to leave the race.
