OPINION: Electric vehicles aren't to blame for lack of Hall Boulevard repair

    By Wayne Newcomb,

This letter is in response to the letter from Patti Waitman-Ingebretsen ("It's time to fix up Hall Boulevard") in the July 11 edition.

I agree with the letter on the state of Hall Boulevard and hope that things will improve under the stewardship of the county and local cities. However, I do have to disagree with the sanctimonious view that electric vehicle owners do not pay for road maintenance.

Since January 2020, EV registration rates in Oregon are up to $190 more than gas vehicles for the two-year period. This is approximately the same amount a 20 mpg gas vehicle would pay in gas taxes for 10,000 miles driven a year.

This fact does not seem to be widely known as I see anti-EV propaganda often state that EVs don't pay their share for road maintenance.
