The Smashing Pumpkins have unveiled plans to release their 13th studio album, Aghori Mhori Mei, on August 2. The album is scheduled to arrive just four days after the band kicks off The Saviors Tour, a North American summer stadium trek with Green Day, Rancid, and The Linda Lindas.

Aghori Mhori Mei is a follow-up to Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts, a triple album that was released in three separate 11-track installments, in November 2022, January 2023, and May 2023. The Smashing Pumpkins recorded the new album over the course of the last few years in the midst of their busy touring commitments.

“In the writing of this new album I became intrigued with the well-worn axiom, ‘you can’t go home again,’” frontman Billy Corgan explained in a statement. “Which I have found personally to be true in form but thought well, what if we tried anyway? Not so much in looking backwards with sentimentality but rather as a means to move forward; to see if in the balance of success and failure that our ways of making music circa 1990-1996 would still inspire something revelatory.”

The Band’s Video Announcement About the New Album

The Smashing Pumpkins also posted a video announcement about Aghori Mhori Mei on their group’s social media sites, featuring Corgan sharing more details about the album and reflecting on the inspiration behind it.

“We played this game of rock ‘n’ roll for 36 years,” he says in the clip, “and had to give the knee many times to ‘what’s the first song?’ and ‘what’s the first statement?’ and let other people judge us by one moment in time.”

He continues, “We felt the right way to hear this record was as an intact body of work—10 songs, about 45 minutes—and then let the fans decide whether or not what we’ve done is what we set out to accomplish. Whether we put ourselves back in that original position. Whether we were able to go home again with this record.”

Corgan concludes, “So, on August 2nd, 2024, it’ll be there for everyone to listen to. We’re just gonna put it out digitally. Of course, we’re gonna put it for sale, and that comes later, but we want to just put the record out. We’re proud of what we’ve done, but we want people to hear the record as one body of work, and they can decide the value of what we have done.”
