Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NM) became the third Democratic senator to call on President Joe Biden to step aside Friday as the pressure continues to grow .

"While the decision to withdraw from the campaign is President Biden's alone, I believe it is in the best interests of our country for him to step aside," the New Mexico senator said in a press release. "By passing the torch, he would secure his legacy as one of our nation's greatest leaders and allow us to unite behind a candidate who can best defeat Donald Trump and safeguard the future of our democracy.”

Heinrich joins Sens. Jon Tester (D-MT) and Peter Welch (D-VT) as they request their party’s presumptive presidential nominee to step aside. On the House side, four more Democrats are asking Biden to step aside, releasing a joint statement calling on him to "pass the torch." The four lawmakers are all members of larger groups that had previously expressed support for Biden.

“We must face the reality that widespread public concerns about your age and fitness are jeopardizing what should be a winning campaign," wrote Reps. Jared Huffman (D-CA), Mark Veasey (D-TX), Jesús “Chuy” García (D-IL) and Mark Pocan (D-WI) on Friday morning.

"This moment in our nation's history calls for a focus that is bigger than any one person. The return of Donald Trump to the White House poses an existential danger to our democracy. We must defeat him in November, and we need a candidate who can do that," Heinrich said.

The Biden Campaign insists the president is still in the race and are disputing reports suggesting he may be exiting the 2024 race.

President Biden is “absolutely” staying in the presidential race, campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Friday, calling him the “best person to take on Donald Trump.”
