Ashlee Simpson is celebrating 20 years of 'Autobiography,' and is 'making new music'

Sixteen years after the release of her most recent album, Bittersweet , Simpson confirmed to Stereogum that new tunes are on the way as she’s “in the studio making new music.”

“Right now I’m working song by song,” she said before stating she’s “sure it’ll end up turning into an album,” with a more grown up sound.

“I’ve grown up now, so it’s a little more grown,” she shared. “And at the moment, it’s been more with live music, so I feel like the direction can always turn, but I’m really happy with where we’re at right now — more of the fun, rocky vibe.”

The rumblings of new music come as the 39-year-old celebrates the 20th anniversary of her debut album, Autobiography , which released July 20, 2004. In honor the milestone, Simpson has released an expanded edition of the LP.

While revisiting where it all started surely has Simpson feeling nostalgic, the singer-songwriter credits much of her inspiration to release new music to her daughter, Jagger Snow .

“[She’s] why I’m really excited to do music again,” she said. “My daughter really wants to sing with me, so I will definitely have her there [in the studio].”

Jagger isn’t the only one Simpson hopes to collab with in the near future, she also shared she has a running list of dream collaborators which includes Alanis Morissette , Fiona Apple and Jewel in addition to Chappell Roan .
