Why did the town need tax increases?

This year during budget season, the Town of Charlotte Court House made several adjustments. The approved budget included increases in the town’s real estate and mobile home tax rates, as well as the town water rate, meal tax rate and water cut off reconnections fees. A cigarette tax of 30 cents per pack was also introduced.

The question with these changes is why. What caused the need for increases? Under the terms of the budget for the current fiscal year, the Town Budget for the General Account climbs from $ 299,605 to $ 362,372 for a total increase of $62,767. The 2024-25 budget for the Waterwork account jumps from $ 223,050 to $377,900 for a total increase of $154,850.

“(Town officials) reviewed the budget and determined what additional revenue was needed for the town to operate daily and to provide water services to the town citizens,” said Sara Crawford. She works as Town Manager for Charlotte Court House.

Crawford said that no citizens or businesses have sought exemption from the tax increases so far. The Town Manager also said she did not receive any citizen input prior to the public hearing, which took place in June.

“We have received no feedback to date,” Crawford said. “However, we are open to receiving any.”
