DES MOINES, Iowa (WHO) — Efforts are underway to restore all of the state government systems and employee devices that have been impacted by the global CrowdStrike outage , according to a statement from Governor Kim Reynolds’ Office.

Gov. Reynolds said the state uses CrowdStrike for malware and virus protection and the outage was caused by an automatic software update.

The statement said the error was identified by the Iowa Department of Management’s Division of Information Technology at 12:30 a.m. Friday and a temporary fix was applied at 1:04 a.m., with a formal fix from CrowdStrike issued at 1:30 a.m.

The initial impact of the outage was limited to about 1,400 servers and 3,300 workstations, which the governor’s office said was less than 20% of all devices across executive branch departments. Work by IT staff is continuing around the clock and it’s estimated that all services will be restored over the weekend.

What is CrowdStrike, the company whose faulty update caused widespread outages?

The governor’s office did not release information on which specific departments or offices were impacted, but the Iowa DOT posted Friday morning that Driver’s license/ID issuance, vehicle registration/titling, oversize/overweight permitting, and International Fuel Tax (IFTA) and Registration (IRP) were affected. Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate also reported issues with the Fast Track Filing system which were later resolved.

The governor’s office says Iowans should be aware that other system outages may cause temporary impacts Friday.
