Watch the skies this weekend, and you’ll see the ascent of the beautiful full Buck Moon. Although this celestial event has a strange name, you can expect the usual radiance of a bright, full moon. Want to find out when and how to view it in all its glory? Here’s everything you need to know about July’s full Buck Moon!

First of all, where does its name come from? The Old Farmer’s Almanac tells us that it refers to the time of year that bucks, aka male deer , are growing out their antlers. Apparently, these animals lose their headgear once a year, only to grow them back even larger each time!

Some Native American tribes have different monikers for the full Buck Moon. For example, the Cree name for the celestial orb at this time of the year is “Feather Moulting Moon.” Alternatively, the Dakota name is “Moon When the Chokeberries Are Ripe.”

So, when can you catch a glimpse of this month’s full moon? Technically, it will reach its peak in the wee hours of Sunday, July 21st. However, you may not actually be able to see it at this time. The Old Farmer’s Almanac explains that it will dip beneath the horizon at 6:17 A.M. Eastern Time. Instead, you should keep an eye out for the full Buck Moon on the evening of Saturday, July 20th. Wait until after sunset, and you should see it rising in the southeast!

According to People , the full Buck Moon has some astronomical significance worth noting. Resident astrologer Kyle Thomas says, “Full moons energetically speed things up and have a stronger gravitational pull on Earth.” He also pointed out that the upcoming full moon will be in Capricorn, the 10th sign of the zodiac, which “can help us to pioneer toward our goals and see results.”

Whether or not you believe in astrology, you won’t want to miss out on the joy of seeing the full Buck Moon. So, remember to take a look outside tomorrow evening!
