Director Rob Reiner has offered an update on the long-awaited sequel to the iconic 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap , revealing that he expects the film to be released in spring or summer of next year.
Reiner has returned as director of the actual sequel, Spinal Tap II , and as the fictional director Marty DiBergi within the movie. The sequel also features the three core members of Spinal Tap played once again by Christopher Guest (as Nigel Tufnel), Michael McKean (as David St. Hubbins), and Harry Shearer (as Derek Smalls), as well as the return of secondary characters portrayed by Fran Drescher and Paul Shaffer, among others.
In a new interview with Deadline , Reiner gave the latest update on the sequel, saying that filming is currently wrapping up in New Orleans.
“It’s going good,” revealed Reiner. “Our first screening for our family and friends will be probably in August, and then sometime in September we’ll start showing it to distributors, and we’re hoping to have it out sometime late spring or early summer of next year.”
He went on to mention a few of the previously reported big-name cameos that will appear in the film, saying, “We got everybody together and we added a couple of surprise guests. We have Paul McCartney and Elton John and Garth Brooks. It’s fun.”
Among the other musicians reported to appear in the sequel are Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith and Metallica’s Lars Ulrich.
In the same interview with Deadline, Reiner discussed his recent Emmy nomination for his documentary on his good friend Albert Brooks. “It’s a total surprise,” he said of the Emmy nod, “Especially because I’ve never made a real documentary. The only one I made was a fake one – Spinal Tap . It’s so funny to get recognized in this way.”
