Many people consider August the end of summer, and the influx of back-to-school advertising is adding fuel to the claim, but summer is far from over.

Whether you want to squeeze in a last-minute vacation or need to calculate how many summer Fridays you have left, here’s what you need to know about the end of the season.

This year, the summer solstice was celebrated on June 20, and summer lasts an average of 93.6 days , according to Almanac .

Fall will start on Sept. 22 in 2024, meaning we still have nearly two months of summer fun left to enjoy before autumn takes over.

The summer solstice is the longest day of the year, meaning it has the most hours of sunlight. On this day we will see the sun at its highest point in the sky, taking longer for it to rise and set.

After the summer solstice, the days gradually will start to lose sunlight during the season. This occurs slowly at first before picking up speed, and we’ll eventually be met with the colder temperatures and seasonal weather characteristic of the fall.

The difference in day length is greatest around the days of the equinoxes. After Sept. 22, the days will continue getting shorter but will do so at an ever-decreasing rate, bringing us to the winter solstice – the shortest day of the year – when the day-to-day difference reaches zero, according to TimeandDate.com.
