Rory McIlroy’s Disastrous Open Championship Performance Leaves Fans In Agreement

Rory McIlroy came into the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon with high expectations following his solo second-place finish at June's U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

Unfortunately for the Northern Irishman, his performance over the first 27 holes has left him trending towards the bottom of the leaderboard. At 13-over par for the tournament midway through his second round on Friday, McIlroy finds himself T140 out of 154 players at The Open.

Stunned by Rory's poor play over the first two rounds at Royal Troon, fans appear to be in agreement about McIlroy's performance this week.

"This is genuinely the worst I’ve ever seen Rory McIlroy play. Seriously. #TheOpen ," Neil said.

McIlroy, who shot a 7-over par 78 on Thursday, posted a 6-over 42 on the front nine in Friday's second round - including a triple-bogey 8 on Royal Troon's par-5 4th hole.

"Obviously the wind is brutal at Troon but my god this is the worst I’ve seen Rory play in a long long time," Marty said.

The 78 that McIlroy shot on Thursday marked his worst round at a major championship since shooting 79 in the first round of the 2019 Open at Royal Portrush.

Barring a massive back-nine barrage of birdies, McIlroy will miss his first cut at The Open Championship since 2019.
