    Sophia Smith , a 23-year-old soccer player from Windsor, Colorado, is making her mark on the international stage as she prepares for her Olympic debut in Paris. Born on August 10, 2000, Smith is part of a new generation of athletes taking the reins of the U.S. women's team.

    Smith was born to parents Kenny and Mollie , both collegiate athletes. Her father played basketball at the University of Wyoming, and her mother played collegiate volleyball. Smith attended Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins, Colorado, where she played soccer and basketball. She has two older sisters, Gabrielle and Savannah .

    Smith attended Stanford University where she played soccer for two seasons and helped lead her team to the 2019 NCAA Championship. She forwent the remainder of her collegiate eligibility to turn pro.

    Smith is not married, but she announced her engagement to NFL wide receiver Michael Wilson on June 15 via social media. She was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated in the June 2023 edition along with national teammates Rose Lavelle , Alex Morgan , and Trinity Rodman .

    Smith started competing in soccer when she was 5 years old and continued to play youth soccer for Real Colorado from 2014 to 2018. She wears the number 9 jersey for the Portland Thorns FC and the number 11 jersey for the U.S. women’s national team. Smith was the first player born in the 2000s to play for the USWNT.

    Smith's outstanding play in college made her a notable up-and-coming athlete. Because of this, she decided to leave college for professional football and was the number one pick in the 2020 NWSL draft. Chosen by the Portland Thorns FC, Smith, age 19, was the first teenage player ever selected in the NWSL draft. In 2022 Smith was the leading scorer for both the Portland Thorns as well as the USWNT. In addition, she became the youngest player to receive the regular-season Most Valuable Player award in NWSL history and was named the 2022 U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year by the U.S. Soccer organization.
