One of the greatest tag teams to never compete in WWE, the Motor City Machine Guns, is rumored to be headed to the top wrestling promotion in the world.

In the spring, it was revealed that the contracts of Impact Wrestling and TNA greats Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley were set to expire soon. The team known as the Motor City Machine Guns has been with the company in its different iterations since 2007. However, with long-time company boss Scott D’Amore no longer around the talented veterans chose not to re-sign with the company.

In the weeks following their departure, the rumors around the wrestling industry were that multi-time tag team champs would be bringing their talents to AEW at some point this summer. The reports made sense. Since the No. 2 company in the world has been throwing around some big contracts in 2024. And the duo seems like a natural fit for the AEW roster.

Well, not so fast. On Thursday, Wrestling Observer reporter Dave Meltzer revealed that those rumors now seem to be false.

It’s been known for months that they had been talking with AEW and WWE ever since their TNA contracts expired,” Meltzer wrote. “Of late, the indications were WWE made the better offer but they were expected to be with whichever side made the best offer. Within wrestling the belief is that they are WWE-bound and Tommaso Ciampa made a reference to them in social media.

“They’ve also been completely silent about it and clearly have made their decision one way or the other.”

The Motor City Machine Guns would be a fantastic addition to the WWE roster. The WWE tag division is as strong as ever and there are great potential matchups for MCMG in the company. Considering they are both in their early 40s and getting good contracts, it is unlikely they will compete for NXT .

Also of note is the recent trend of WWE using the name that performers built outside the company. So there is a good chance Alexy Shelley and Chris Sabin will have the same monikers in WWE. Plus, they have a path back to TNA with NXT and their former home currently having a working relationship.
