Shasta County's email and certain online services were hit by interruptions early Friday and may be continue to be "temporarily unavailable" as a global tech outage has crippled multiple Microsoft software services across the country.
"All Shasta County departments and offices remain open and functioning according to regular hours of operation. For urgent matters, we recommend reaching out to the appropriate county offices via phone," said a statement from county public information officer David Maung on Friday morning.
"The outage, attributed to a network issue within Microsoft's infrastructure, has impacted various platforms, including Outlook, Teams and other essential tools relied upon for daily operations. Consequently, Shasta County employees and residents may face challenges in accessing email communications and other digital resources," said Maung.
Shasta County's Information Technology team is addressing the issues, said Maung, and is aiming to "restore full functionality as swiftly as possible."
The major technology outage grounded flights, hampered public transit systems and disrupted operations at banks and hospitals around the globe Friday in an incident a cybersecurity firm blamed on a faulty system update.
In the U.S., thousands of flights were canceled Friday morning. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines were among those who grounded flights less than an hour after Microsoft said it resolved a cloud-services-related outage that impacted several low-cost carriers.
CrowdStrike, a U.S. firm that advertises being used by over half of Fortune 500 companies, said one of its recent content updates had a defect that impacted Microsoft's Windows Operating System, adding the incident was "not a security incident or cyberattack."
