A group of “elusive” sea creatures was recently seen in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Boaters off Madeira, a Portuguese archipelago, spotted a pod of pygmy killer whales, which are a rare dolphin species.

It was “the most unusual encounter,” according to a July 19 Facebook post from Lobosanda, a whale watching company based in Madeira, which is about 300 miles north of the Canary Islands.

“Our guides and captains were speechless for some time, unable to identify what we (were) observing,” the company said.

They snapped several photos, which show the finned animals breaching the surface.

After running the photos by researchers, the company confirmed that the marine mammals were pygmy killer whales.

The encounter marked “one of the very few times these animals were ever documented around Madeira,” the company said, adding it was “very exciting indeed.”

Distinguished by their round heads and black bodies , the dolphins are often confused with melon-headed whales and false killer whales, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Found in tropical and subtropical waters, the animals can weigh up to nearly 500 pounds and can measure up to 8.5 feet long.

They typically live in groups of between 12 to 50 individuals, are known to eat squid and fish, and are “very aggressive” in captivity.

Much else about the dolphins — which “are considered naturally rare” — remains unknown, including their lifespan and reproductive habits.

In fact, they were only known to exist from a pair of fossil skulls until live specimens were caught in 1954, per NOAA.
