MONMOUTH COUNTY - The Monmouth County Commissioners warn residents that we are heading in to peak West Nile virus season, mid-August and September.  Mosquito-borne illness, such as Equine Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis and West Nile are transmitted through mosquito stings and West Nile has been detected in mosquitos earlier in the season this year, according to Commissioner Director Tom Arnone, "The Mosquito Control Division is continuing to monitor mosquitoes throughout the County for West Nile Virus and other diseases.  The staff is also inspecting and treating sites of stagnant water to control mosquito larvae."

The largest risk of mosquito breeding is in stagnant water, such as in pots, buckets and garbage cans.  These should be dumped regularly.  In 2023, New Jersey had 8 cases of West Nile.  In 2022, New Jersey had 20 cases of West Nile and in 2021, 36 cases. A blood test is used to determine infection of West Nile. The virus causes mild fever in approximately 20% of cases and severe sickness for 1 in 150 people, according to federal health officials.

Most mosquito activity occurs in the hours between dusk and darkness, and Monmouth County residents can mitigate the probability of getting stung by wearing long sleeves and long pants and use an EPA-registered repellant.  Monmouth County's Mosquito Control Division will do a courtesy inspection of your property if you submit a request on Monmouth County's website .
