A global technology outage on Friday morning caused one flight cancellation and temporarily grounded others at the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport.

Some medical care facilities on the Central Coast were also affected, but operations at SLO County government offices were unaffected.

A faulty software update issued by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike affected customers running Microsoft Windows, The Associated Press reported, knocking media outlets offline, disrupting hospitals and government agencies and forcing airlines around the world to cancel or delay flights.

Crowdstrike said the outage was “not a hacking incident or cyberattack,” the Associated Press said, adding that a fix was reportedly on the way.

Here’s how the outage has affected SLO County.

SLO airport canceled one flight due to tech outage

The San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport experienced minimal impact from the outage with the exception of one flight cancellation early Friday morning, according to Deputy Director of Airports Courtney Pene.

Their system experienced minor glitches in the morning, Pene said. She said that the air conditioning, electric doors, flight display screens and parking kiosk were all temporarily down but that everything is back online now.

The 5 a.m. United Airlines flight to Denver did not take off Friday morning, but no other flights were canceled.

“We experienced some delays this morning, but everyone is taking off with success,” Pene said.

You can check your flight status online via the airport’s website.

How have computer issues affected local hospitals?

Hospitals in the region have also been affected by the outage.

In a statement on Friday morning, Dignity Health said some of its medical facilities across the Central Coastal region were affected by the tech issues.

“We continue to provide safe, high-quality care to our patients and thank everyone for their patience as our teams take immediate action to restore any impacted systems,” Dignity Health said in the statement.

The health care company said, “Patients will be contacted directly if their appointments are affected.”

Dignity Health operates three hospitals on the Central Coast , including Arroyo Grande Community Hospital and French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo.

Another regional medical provider, Adventist Health, is not a customer of CrowdStrike and thus experienced minimal impact.

“We were not directly affected; however, we experienced some impact with select third-party systems that rely on this technology,” spokesperson Japhet De Oliveira said in a statement sent to The Tribune. “We are monitoring the affected vendors for any direct impact on our health system. We are managing diverted ambulance traffic to our EDs (emergency departments) from affected neighboring healthcare systems.”

    What about banks?

Golden 1 Credit Union, which has three branches across the county in SLO, Atascadero and Paso Robles and an ATM at Cal Poly, said they are aware of the issue.

“Our services, including ATMs and mobile and online banking, are fully available,” Chad Carrington, Golden 1 Credit Union senior vice president and chief Information officer, told The Sacramento Bee . “We are working diligently to assess any potential impacts as the day continues.

“We are grateful to our team for their hard work to ensure we can serve our members and community.”

Downdetector, a real-time outage monitor, also reported Friday that it had received outage reports for Chase and Bank of America .

    DMV offers limited services

The California Department of Motor Vehicles was offering limited services at its offices on Friday as the result of the outage, according to the agency’s Office of Public Affairs.

“Our online services and kiosks are not impacted, and customers are encouraged to use those service channels to complete transactions,” the DMV said in an email to The Bee.
