DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A pesticide product is in the process of being pulled from shelves across the state.

According to the Ohio Department of Agriculture, a consumer complaint has caused the organization to remove “Sergeant’s Nature’s Guardian, Flea and Tick Control, squeeze on for Cats and Kittens” from stores. ODA reports Dollar Tree is a seller of the product.

Clove and peppermint oils, as well as lemongrass, are reported as “active ingredients,” which are listed as a “minimum risk pesticide product.”

When ODA inspectors conducted a lab test, the product reportedly displayed signs that it was contaminated with imidacloprid and methoprene, two ingredients in flea and tick pesticide. The package allegedly did not include instructions on their use, which means the box was mislabeled, ODA said.

The U.S. EPA was alerted by ODA of the issue, which prompted the hold order of any remaining inventory at any Dollar Tree location.

“The Pesticide Enforcement program is continuing efforts to communicate with Dollar Tree Headquarters, requesting the product be removed from stores in Ohio,” said ODA.
