PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) – The Durkee Fire in Baker County grew overnight Thursday and spurred new evacuation notices Friday as firefighters work to contain it.

By mid-day Friday, the fire reached 3,123 acres, or nearly 5 square miles, the Oregon State Fire Marshal said. This comes after it was reportedly 2,699 acres with 0% containment Friday morning.

The Oregon State Fire Marshal said the lightning-sparked fire began off of I-84 near Durkee and grew rapidly. Officials have now invoked Immediate Response to send additional resources to help combat it.

Upon the State of Oregon’s request, the State of California also sent three strike teams to help. That includes 15 fire engines and 80 firefighters.

“Our partnerships with California and Washington are strong,” Oregon State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple said. “Over the years, we’ve worked side-by-side to provide aid in times of need. These partnerships are invaluable. I want to say thank you to both California and Washington. Oregon will have your back if you need support in the future.”

With another round of heavy winds and lightning expected in the forecast in the coming weeks, officials said it’s important for people to take steps to eliminate preventable fires from starting.
